On October 5, TMBT brought home three awards at the 28th VRCA Awards of Excellence gala in Vancouver. The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) hosts the annual event to recognize top-performing contractors in B.C. This year, more than 150 companies—representing 45 projects and approximately $1.3 billion in construction value—competed for 23 awards: Gold, Outstanding Achievement, Judges’ Choice, and the Heritage Award.

For their work on the UBC District Energy Centre, the Mechanical Division netted TMBT’s first Gold Award in the Mechanical Contractor ($3-8 million) category, and the Electrical Division received its first Silver Award in the Electrical Contractor (up to $2 million) category. Some of the key challenges included working on a fully-occupied campus and the size constraints of the site itself. This was also the first partnership between TMBT in Vancouver and Rambler Fabrication, which spooled and fabricated the pipe required for the project.

The Mechanical Division also received a Silver Award in the Mechanical Contractor (up to $3 million) category for its work on the UBC Alumni Centre. Crews faced similar challenges with the size constraints and location of the site and coordinating work on an occupied campus near fully-functioning bus loop. The project was completed in August 2015 and holds the distinction of a good safety record with zero lost-time incidents.

In an article written for the Journal of Commerce News Service, Fiona Famulak, President of the VRCA says "Through these awards, we shine a light on the dedication and professionalism that our members bring to their projects—the complex, state-of-the-art infrastructure that citizens use every day." A huge congratulations to the project teams and crews involved in both projects! Previously, the TMBT Mechanical Division has received two silver awards—one in 2012 for the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre in Vancouver and one in 2013 for the Transportation Management Centre in Coquitlam. This brings the TMBT’s total number of VRCA Awards of Excellence to five.
