The Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (CMHA) Facility Replacement Project is a purpose-built healthcare facility located on the Riverview Lands in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Delivered under a design-build model, the project was managed by EllisDon Corporation with architectural services provided by Parkin Architects.
The new 146,000-square-foot facility includes a below-grade parkade and was designed to support the treatment of individuals across the province living with severe and complex substance use and mental health challenges. The 105-bed facility features seven residential units, each comprised of private single rooms with ensuite bathrooms, along with dedicated patient and clinical support spaces including exam rooms, counselling rooms, care team stations, lounges, nutrition and dining areas, and visitor spaces.
Additional components of the facility include clinical support and administrative areas, teaching, education and research spaces, healing community areas for creativity, exercise and spirituality, Indigenous art and sacred space, and a full production kitchen. The mechanical design-build team included WSP Consultants, Fred Welsh Ltd., Viaduct Sheet Metal Ltd., Control Solutions Ltd. for building automation, Viking Fire Protection, and Aarc-West Mechanical Insulation.
Construction commenced in 2018 and was completed in August 2021, delivering a modern, patient-focused healthcare environment that supports recovery, research, and innovation in mental health and addiction care.
